Foulk Living Holds Culinary Demonstration

She combined three of her greatest passions. Renee Eaton decided to share her cultural pride and love of food with the residents she adores. The Executive Chef at Foulk Living in Wilmington, Delaware, held a special culinary demonstration, including a narration of historical facts to the residents of the senior living community. The demo was a celebration of Black History Month, which acknowledges the struggles and honors the triumphs of generations of African Americans.

“I was thinking about all the different celebrations and events I prepare food for here. Since February is Black History Month, I decided it was a great opportunity to present foods I truly know. This is what I grew up on, and I wanted to share that with the residents,” Eaton said. “Black cuisine has taken on the term ‘soul food. Just like it sounds, soul food is a cuisine that is cooked coming from the soul with an abundance of love and passion.”

Eaton spent a great deal of time preparing for her presentation, including decorating the setting, gathering food and recipes, and writing a script. “I wanted to start with ingredients from the garden and show how it all comes together,” she said.

On February 16^th, Eaton presented narratives and tastes of food native to various regions and cultures. Samples included collard greens, gumbo, black-eyed peas, cornbread, catfish, fried green tomatoes, and Ghana-style jollof rice.

The Black History Month event launched what will be a series of monthly cooking demos that Eaton will present to the residents.

“We are so fortunate to have Renee here at Foulk Living,” said Leslie Johnson, Executive Director. “She is always working to make our residents happy, and her cooking demos are just one way in which she engages them.”
