Foulk Living’s Executive Director is a Guest on LTC Podcast

It is no secret that the long-term care industry has been struggling with staff shortages since the pandemic. However, Foulk Living is an exception, as team members enjoy every single day on the job. This success can be attributed to strong leadership that prioritizes the physical and emotional health of caregivers and provides a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

Leslie Johnson, Foulk Living’s executive director, joined the LTC Heroes podcast to discuss how she puts her team at ease and encourages communication.  “Our open-door policy is for all levels, from my frontline to my managers,” she says. “We work on each other’s thoughts to find the best solutions to correct or achieve things.”

Johnson spoke to Experience Care’s Peter Murphy Lewis about how she gains insight into what her team needs and wants. “Talking to the team, empowering them, and listening to them makes you realize everyone’s a person and everyone has fears and anxieties,” she says. “This industry allows you to make a difference in people’s lives, not just for the residents but for the staff. And that’s what I love. I love seeing their faces, reactions, and growth.”

Another reason people love working at Foulk Living is the great positive energy of the staff, which is partly due to efforts that increase motivation, such as employee appreciation activities and spirited birthday celebrations. “All of we managers sign and give cards,” Johnson says of birthday occasions. “I go up and sing to each employee.” She notes that the result is stronger bonds between team members. “They become part of a family, and that makes a difference.”
